Three people have died and several people have been injured in a fire at a block of flats near Barcelona.

The injured are understood to include a baby who is ‘critical’ and two adults who are ‘serious’.  

The baby suffered smoke inhalation and the other two adults who are were hurt after leaping from the burning block. All are being treated at Vall d’Hebron Hospital.

The blaze, which is thought to have started in a sixth floor apartment, has now been brought under control.

Former Barcelona mayor Xavier Garcia Albiol tweeted: ‘All my thoughts are with the families of the victims.’

Local firefighters tweeted: ‘Among those affected there’s a baby who is critical, two adults who are serious and at least 13 people who have been injured.’

The fire broke out about 9am local time this morning.

The three people who have died are all adults.

Most of the other 15 casualties are said to have suffered ‘non-serious’ injuries, although there are reports of another seriously injured adult being taken to Barcelona’s Sant Pau Hospital.

The apartment block where the fire broke out is in an avenue called Avenida Marques de Mont-Roig.

No information has yet been released on the nationalities of the dead and injured.
