Thick fog lingering over Sydney has grounded flights at the airport and brought peak-hour traffic to a sudden halt.
Travellers out of the city both by air and by road have been advised to allow for extra time on their journeys as low fog settled in on Wednesday morning.
An ‘extreme’ road weather alert was issued for the city about 5am by the Bureau of Meteorology.

‘Reduced visibility in fog may make road conditions dangerous during Wednesday morning,’ a BOM spokesperson said in a statement.
‘Motorists are advised to take extreme care.’
Flights have been delayed by up to 90 minutes due to the fog, which has moved from the south-west of New South Wales before moving towards Sydney.
Passengers have been advised to check with their airlines regarding delays.
‘Foggy conditions in Sydney this morning. Please allow plenty of travel time and check with your airline for flight status,’ a Sydney Airport spokesperson tweeted.
Drivers have been told to allow extra time on their commute.

Visibility has been reduced to just 200m in some parts of Sydney, but the conditions are expected to improve by about 8am after sunrise.
A clear, sunny day is expected for the city with pockets of fog remaining in the north-west.
The fog has been caused by rain falling over the past two days, combined with moisture from the coast.
