Taking a boat ride on the night river along the trees littered with flickering fireflies is a great way to spend the evening and relax after the flight.
This place is relatively cheaper than the others near Kuala Lumpur. Another advantage is the use of a boat without a motor, so you can enjoy the sounds of the night nature to your heart’s content.
It is almost impossible to take high-quality photos on a phone or camera (only using a long exposure on the camera – which is difficult, since you are swimming all the time). So you have to remember everything, but the place is worth it.
National Elephant Conservation Centre Kuala Gandah NECC
Being an elephant in Malaysia is not easy: the jungle is being cleared and the natural habitat is dwindling. Because of this, elephants come to the fields and vegetable gardens of the villagers who fight with them.
Therefore, the Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Center was created, which treats elephants, and also trains them to help their relatives and take them out of dangerous territories. Elephants trust theirs by an order of magnitude more.
This is the only place among all zoos and elephant farms where you can see happy elephants – and this is very striking. Here they are treated with care, elephant rides and other attractions are also prohibited, visitors are allowed to observe elephants in close to natural conditions.
Admission is free, you can watch elephants, treat them to something tasty (you can buy food on the spot), walk in the park, watch a movie and mini-show (of course, no circus violence).
And for an additional fee, you can swim in the river with the elephants (€ 2 per person) – so take a change of dry clothes with you.
Malacca, a colorful city
Malacca is one of the oldest cities in Malaysia and is entirely on the UNESCO World Heritage List, very vibrant, beautiful, and diverse. Residents use a variety of colors to paint their houses, so the photogenicity of Malacca is simply off the scale. This city can also be called the city of cats: these purring creatures are found almost at every corner.
Jonker Walk Street – Night market every Friday and Saturday. You can buy gifts and taste a variety of Malay food at low prices (€ 1-2 per dish).
A’Famosa Fortress (Jalan Parameswara, Bandar Hilir, 78000 Alor Gajah, Melaka) – you can climb the ruins of an ancient fort built by the Portuguese during colonization in the 16th century.
Rickshaws – the city is famous for its rickshaws. Each driver decorates the vehicle to his liking and, of course, tries to surpass the others. You can see everything from Hello Kitty to 7 rows of fake flowers proudly wrapping around the steering wheel.
The Buddhist “Temple of Green Clouds” (25, Jalan Tokong, 75200 Melaka) is a beautiful Chinese temple dedicated to three religions at once: Buddhism, Taoism, and Confucianism. Everyone is welcome here: you can go inside, look around and take pictures non-intrusively.
Surfing and kayaking
Cherating is a small town for those who love water sports and a relaxed atmosphere. It is located on the coast of the South China Sea, but it is not always suitable for swimming: it depends on the season.
The main entertainment in Cherating:
- Surfing (November – March, you can rent a surfboard and book a lesson)
- Kitesurfing (May – October)
- Kayaking on the mangrove river (all year)
Penang Island
Penang Island is located west of Kuala Lumpur and, like Malacca, is entirely included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This means that nothing can be demolished on the island: you may well see a mall built over an 18th-century building. All the most interesting is concentrated in the capital of the island, Georgetown.
Climb Mount Penang. You can walk, but this is an option for the most athletic and desperate. For the rest, there is a cute funicular (it looks like a tram that can travel at an angle of 45 ° – by the way, this is the oldest funicular in Asia). Upstairs, enjoy the opening view of the city and the entire island and walk along the green area.
Take part in horse races. The sight is fascinating. Don’t forget to arrive early to get the best seats.
Meditate at the Temple of the Dragon of the Mountains (Khoo Kongsi). This is a temple museum with a colorful interior, exquisite carvings, and cool statues. It is especially impressive in the evening. During the Chinese New Year, a prediction can be obtained for donation. Entrance costs € 2.
Kuala Terenggana, the city of delicious food
A neat and pleasant city offering bread and circuses, namely a lot of street art and tasty inexpensive food.
Visit its Chinatown with a lot of diverse street art: just go and take pictures, enjoying the bright colors of the houses and the imagination of the artists.
Visit the bazaar on Pasar Payang, it is open every day. Here you can buy gifts for friends and relatives: clothes, fabrics and souvenirs. And of course, what a market without cheap delicacies of national cuisine! Look out for fish chips (keropok) and all kinds of puff pastries, sweet and savory (roti). On the second floor, you can sit and have breakfast with rice cooked on the coconut with fish. The average bill is € 1-2, the hottest days are Friday and Saturday.
The Crystal Mosque (Pulau Wan Man, 21000 Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu) is a mosque that looks more like a palace from fairy tales: everything shines and shimmers. Girls should wear a headscarf, no cutout clothes, a long skirt, or loose pants.
