Sunday service! Burger King throws shade at Chick-fil-A after Kanye West references the chicken sandwich chain’s policy in new song ‘Closed on a Sunday’

  • Burger King tweeted Friday: ‘open on sunday’ and responded to annoyed Chick-fil-A fans with witty banter
  • Kanye West’s song was released this week and lyrics are: ‘Closed on Sunday, you my Chick-fil-A. You’re my number one, with the lemonade’
  • Another line is: ‘Closed on Sunday, you my Chick-fil-A. Hold the selfies, put the ‘gram away. Get your family, y’all hold hands and pray’
  • Chick-fil-A founder Truett Cathy decided to close the chain on Sundays in the hope it would encourage more people to spend time with family
  • On Saturday, a spokesperson for Chick-fil-A Inc. said about the tweet: ‘We are always grateful to see excitement for the brand’

Burger King has seemingly posted a salty response to Kanye West’s reference to a rival fast food chain, drawing attention to their own brand by getting in on the buzz around his ‘Closed on a Sunday’ song.

Lyrics for the new tune on his Jesus Is King album include: ‘Closed on Sunday, you my Chick-fil-A. Hold the selfies, put the ‘gram away. Get your family, y’all hold hands and pray.

‘Closed on Sunday, you my Chick-fil-A. You’re my number one, with the lemonade.’

The creators of the Whopper burger simply tweeted Friday: ‘Open on a Sunday.’

Burger King’s tweet to 1.8million followers appeared to work as the post garnered approximately 4,000 reactions, with the majority being likes and several hundred shares.

Quickly realizing the connection to West’s track, commenters tweeted that Burger King was throwing ‘shade’ at Chick-fil-A.

But the BK Twitter manager refused to directly admit it was a poke at Chick-fil-A, simply replying: ‘omg light???’

As social media followers responded seemingly critically of Burger King, pointing out that it still did not make many of them want to opt for the brand over the chicken-centric chain, BK didn’t back down.

In reply to one user’s attempt to squander the effect of the burger brand’s witty tweet, by writing, ‘I’m open everyday’, Burger King hit back with another shady comment: ‘We have soda fountains for that thirst.’

A Chick-fil-A staff member even showed contempt at BK’s poking fun at the new song.

‘As a @ChickfilA employee. I’m not offended by this at all. Have fun at church@BurgerKing … oh wait,’ one quipped.

West’s song and fresh approach to his music career is in line with Chick-fil-A’s beliefs.

Founder Truett Cathy established the closed on a Sunday idea in hope customers are encouraged to spend more time with family and friends and the brand says they spend Sundays ‘delivering recipes, activities and inspiration that might bring you a little closer together’.

While Chick-fil-A didn’t respond on social media, a spokesperson seemed to appreciate the rapper and Burger King mentioning them.

‘We are always grateful to see excitement for the brand,’ a rep told Fox News Saturday.

Some Twitter users quipped that they would rather go elsewhere and Chick-fil-A said in a statement they're 'always grateful to see excitement for the brand'
