I’m in my 20s and don’t want to end up ‘bitter’ like so many people in their 30s and 40s – how do I avoid it?
A woman in her 20s asked the internet for advice on how not to ‘become bitter’ like those in their 30s and 40s.
Layah Heilpern, from Dubai, took to Twitter to ask advice from older social media users however she may have ruffled a few feathers.
Some people said she has a ‘disrespectful mindset’, while others were happy to dish out some wisdom, advising her to ‘build strong boundaries’ and to ‘focus on herself’.
In her tweet she wrote: ‘I see many bitter people in their 30s and 40s. What advice would you give to people like me in their 20s so we don’t end up like this?’

Another said: ‘100% focus on yourself. Don’t follow the narrative that you have to step and repeat the life of your family before you.
‘Start investing early. Don’t drink alcohol. Have friends who have a growth mindset. Find a partner who has the same values and is a hard worker.’
Others agreed saying: ‘Life is short. 100% focus on yourself. You’re a product of your environment. If you’re unhappy, change your environment.
‘This includes people and possibly family. I’ve had to cull a lot of negative stuff to be content and happy with life.’

‘If you are not solid you can’t help anyone or be a good partner. Yes, care about them but make sure you are right first. Or you can lose yourself.’
However others weren’t as forthcoming and said she had a ‘disrespectful mindset’ after her reply to one persons advice annoyed many.
One person wrote: ‘Don’t mistake internet personalities for worthwhile advice.’
To which Layah replied: ‘You had internet personalities back in your day?’
While many saw the funny side of Layah’s reply it also rattled a few cages of people born in the 90’s who grew up with the internet.
One person wrote: ‘Haha, next piece of advice: don’t get caught-up in thinking your generation invented the wheel and there was nothing else before 🙂 (this is serious: I see so many people in their 20s calling anyone older than them a “boomer” and missing 40 years of relevant historical context).’

Another joked: ‘Ha back in your day? I’m 42. Yeah we had Internet personalities 20 years ago. Cars too.’
Someone else wrote: ‘This is what I’m talking about. The rudeness of your reply p***es people off. You do realise your generation didn’t invent the internet. People were ‘googling it’ in 1998!’
While another said: ‘Back in our day? Who do you think created Internet personalities? 30s/40s. You and this mentality is what’s wrong with us. Advice; be better than the disrespectful mindset and close the gap.’
A fifth wrote: ‘And respect for other people.. we had a lot of that.’
