The Holiday Guru is always on call to answer your questions.
This week reasonably priced accommodation in Seville and a tours for singletons to Brazil are on the agenda…
Q. My wife suffers so badly from ear ache due to changes in cabin pressure that she no longer wishes to fly by plane. Would a helicopter ride to the Isles of Scilly be OK?
John Henderson, via email.
Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro
A. Your wife should be fine as the altitude of flights will be so much lower than in planes. Chewing gum, yawning and deep breathing can help. Penzance to Isles of Scilly helicopters are being reinstated next spring, from about £230 return (penzanceheliport.co.uk).
Q. I am a 50-plus female solo traveller and would like to visit Vietnam and Cambodia or Argentina and Brazil, but not on my own. Any tips?
Tina, via email.
A. The adventure specialist Explore has a 15-day Highlights of Vietnam and Cambodia group trip from £2,149, and a 14-day Buenos Aires to Rio package from £3,219 pp (explore.co.uk). Both prices include single supplements.
Q. We would like to see the Northern Lights, but I must go in the school holidays from October 23 to November 2, flying from Bristol. Can you help?
Tony and Bernie Martin, via email.
A. There’s a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights in October in Iceland. Regent Holidays has a four-day South Iceland Winter Super Break with three nights in Reykjavik. You can enjoy nightly aurora tours by coach from £665 pp B&B, flying from Bristol on those dates (regent-holidays.co.uk).
Q. My daughter lives in Rusper, West Sussex, and I’d like to make a surprise visit. I don’t have the internet — is there somewhere cheap you can recommend to stay nearby? She reads the Daily Mail, so please don’t use my name.
A. Yes, try the bright and cheery Da Vinci Guest House on the edge of Crawley, which has single rooms from £40 (01293 511938, davinci-guesthouse- gatwick.co.uk).
Q. My wife and I are planning a break in Seville in early October. Can you recommend any reasonably priced accommodation?
Alan Saunders, via email.
The holiday guru recommends staying at Elvira Plaza, a boutique hotel in Seville
A. Boutique hotel, Elvira Plaza, on a lovely, quiet square with orange trees in the central Santa Cruz neighbourhood, has doubles from £90 (hotelelviraplaza.com). For more ideas, see ‘Seville for under £100 a night’ at dailymail.co.uk.
Q. Could you recommend a hotel in Palma, somewhere central. I may be travelling on my own and am thinking September or the beginning of October.
Nina White, Leics.
A. There is no shortage of options in Palma, Majorca. Try Hotel Ca N’Alexandre, which has recently opened. It’s at the centre of the action and is steeped in history. Book direct using the promotion code ‘TONIC’ and get a 5 per cent discount. Doubles from £144 b&b, canalexandre.com.
