Two kangaroos have been caught in a backyard fight before a cute wombat stepped in to intervene. 

The remarkable footage showed the jumping kangaroos brawling at a rescue shelter at Cessnock in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales.

The male kangaroos, hopping on their feet, exchanged a couple of blows before the wombat came running in between them in an attempt to break up the conflict.

Distracted, one of the kangaroos then tried to grab the wombat before she escaped between his legs. 

Cedar Creek Wombat Rescue Inc and Wombat Hospital posted the incredible footage to Facebook on July 12.

‘I do wake up to a lot of mess from the released kids parting all night, but had to laugh at the males fighting and a wombat wanting to play as well,’ the post said. 

The post was viewed 14,000 times and received more than 700 reactions, with many highlighting the true Aussie nature of the encounter. 

‘Australian wildlife at its best,’ one person posted. 

‘Doesn’t get more Aussie than this,’ another person said.
