Alex Perry reveals why no one wants to wear his fashion brand in Australia

Fashion designer Alex Perry has given a rather brutal explanation for why his brand never became popular in Australia.

Perry launched his eponymous label in 1992, and quickly became known for his opulent red carpet gowns and jewelled corsets.

Yet Perry, 59, claims his designs were never ‘cool enough’ to really take off in the Australian market, forcing him to take his business overseas.

Australian designer Alex Perry, 59, (pictured) says his brand is ‘not cool enough’ to be popular Down Under

‘I was never the one to watch, or the cool one, it was always all about these other designers. But I kept thinking “I make really good clothes and I think they are really beautiful”,’ the Australia’s Next Top Model judge told Sunday Confidential.

While Perry’s garments are stocked in both Myer and David Jones, he claims his garments simply don’t appeal to Australian shoppers.

‘So I started to look at what I was doing and I thought “you know what, I think I am pretty cool”, but it is in a glamorous way, not what cool is defined as here,’ he said.

‘I always thought, I am not sure … I don’t know if they are going to want my clothes overseas,’ Perry added.

Perry has since found huge success selling internationally, and is stocked in luxury retailers across the world.

Bolstering his overseas appeal is the long list of A-list celebrities who regularly sport his frocks on the red carpet, including Jennifer Lopez, Hailey Bieber, Gwyneth Paltrow, Megan Fox and Lupita Nyong’o.

Perry once confessed on The Kyle & Jackie O Show that he gets more excited refusing to fit prospective celebrity customers, than listing off his high-profile roster of clients.

While speaking to the breakfast radio hosts, Kyle Sandilands asked: ‘Do you get off on saying I’ve dressed [so-and-so]…?’

‘I get off more on telling people “No, we’re not going to dress you!”‘ Alex admitted with a laugh.

He is also described how the process works when it comes to dressing a celebrity.

‘In most cases, with all the international girls, their stylists call in clothing and they call it in from all over the world,’ he said of dressing stars, ‘so you never actually know until it actually happens,’ he explained.

‘I remember with Jennifer Lopez, I saw the room they had all the clothes in and thought “there’s no way that we’re gonna..[be the choice]” – I mean there were hundreds of dresses in there.’

‘So when it happens it’s like a real “pinch me” moment.’

Perry said up until a celebrity actually walks the runway of a red carpet, he’s never actually sure if his dress will be the one they pick – even if it’s been custom-made for the event.

‘That’s just part of what that job is,’ he admitted.
