A driver has been fined for almost wiping out a cyclist as they changed lanes after footage of the incident was handed over to police.

A South Australian cyclist captured the moment a Mercedes moves across three lanes in a last-minute attempt to turn right.

The car almost wipes out the cyclist who was also using the right hand lane.

The cyclist submitted the video to both the Cycliq Facebook page and the police, who later fined the driver.

A driver has been fined for almost wiping out a cyclist as they change lanes, but some believe it’s the cyclist who was actually in the wrong

While some social media users blasted the motorist for their reckless driving, others believed the cyclist was also in the wrong.

‘Why is the cyclist in the right lane? Not sure what is going on here?’ one Facebook user asked.

‘The cyclist just kept going and did not make a left. Also, the street looks like main through fare without a bike lane,’ another person said.

According to South Australian road laws, cyclists must keep to the left where practical.

‘Cyclists must keep as close as reasonably practicable to the left-hand side of the road or bikeway except when making, or about to make, a right hand turn or where the road is divided into lanes,’ Legal Services Commission of South Australia says.

Another user made said perhaps the cyclist was intending on making a right turn up ahead at the intersection he was approaching.

‘Careless Mercedes driver is trying to drive right across three marked lanes in order to get into the u-turn box. Would be nice to know which of the multiple road laws they broke with that maneuver they were fined for,’ the Facebook user said.
