Baby tragically dies after catching Covid-19 in South Australia

  • Toddler who had tested positive to Covid-19 has died in South Australia
  • The child’s exact cause of death will be confirmed by the SA coroner
  • SA Premier Steven Marshall made the announcement on Thursday afternoon

A South Australian child under the age of two with COVID-19 has died, as the state recorded 1374 new infections.

Premier Steven Marshall confirmed the death on Thursday afternoon and said it would be referred to the coroner to determine if the virus caused the death.

If Covid is confirmed as the reason for the toddler’s death, that would make the child Australia’s youngest fatality caused by the virus.

‘This child was COVID-positive but the cause of death hasn’t been determined yet,’ Mr Marshall told reporters.

He called the distressing development ‘very sad news’.

In total 37 South Australians are in hospital with Covid-19 and four of them are in intensive care wards.
