British woman’s bathroom slammed as dangerous by interior design critics

A woman’s modern bathroom has divided interior enthusiasts thanks to a series of ‘questionable’ and potentially dangerous design choices. 

The space was built after remodelling the British client’s small en suite and merging it with the adjacent in-home library. 

The bathroom is complete with black and white tiles, a raised free-standing bath with a ‘moat’ around the perimeter, chrome towel rods, chandeliers and recessed shelves.

The bathroom’s problematic design includes an open shower that leaks into the rest of the room, camouflaged stairs to the tub, a sharp alcove by the tub and a chandelier directly above it, and a camouflaged recessed shelf by the shower

The layout is not consistent with traditional bathrooms as the toilet is right at the entrance. A giant tub sits atop a small flight of stairs in the corner.

An open shower is located across from the toilet and has no glass covering or shower curtain and the walls and floors are both tiled with different black-and-white designs.

While the remodel has created a modern new look, many are concerned about the possible risks its unique features present. 

‘I twisted my ankle, tore my ACL, and broke my neck just by looking at this travesty,’ a woman wrote on a photo of the bathroom in an interior design Facebook group. 

‘Not to be dramatic but I can already pictures all the ways I would slip to my death in this bathroom,’ another said.

She and many others cited the tiled stairs leading up the tub to be a major hazard especially when the bathroom is wet. 

‘Why are the stairs even there? Even if you could see them through the optical illusion, you would still trip and fall.’ 

‘This is a cracked skull waiting to happen.’

However, the bathroom installers insist it is perfectly safe and simply a reflection of the client’s desire for a unique, eye-popping bathroom.

The floor tiles are ‘specifically designed for bathrooms’ so are capable of taking a ‘wet and bare foot without risk’, they say.

‘Each step is over regulation size and exactly the same size from top to bottom and so plenty of tread area and very safe. Having been in the room personally it’s very clear where the steps are – again maybe not so visible through the camera angles,’ they added.

‘This bathroom is exactly how the customer requested it. At one point there was even talk of potentially more steps into the bath.’

In response to a critic who said they ‘stubbed their toe looking at it’, the company simply responded: ‘Pay more attention to your surroundings and that won’t happen again.’ 

‘Your either going to love it or hate it. But either way it’s a monster of a bathroom and the workmanship that has gone into it is second to none,’ they added.

Other interior fans praised the bathroom and said if the owner was pleased, it was perfect. 

‘The vision they had is wild. But the job looks to be well executed! Good job,’ one woman wrote.

‘I absolutely love it. It’s a masterpiece and that bath is something else. I want one!’
