Bronco Selwyn Cobbo sin-binned for fend gone wrong on Bulldogs new recruit Toby Sexton

Brisbane Broncos and Queensland State of Origin star Selwyn Cobbo has been sin-binned after an attempted fend left Bulldogs recruit Toby Sexton with blood pouring from his nose.

The Broncos went into halftime of their NRL clash against Canterbury at their spiritual home ground at Belmore Sports Ground leading 22-18 but down a man after the incident late in the first half.

Cobbo was running the ball and attempted to fend the newly minted Bulldogs halfback off, only for the two to get tangled and Sexton leaving the field with a head injury.

Sexton was forced to leave the field for assessment after taking the heavy knock to the head, leaving the ‘Dogs without their playmaker

Commentator Michael Ennis said under the NRL’s continued crackdown on high shots, Cobbo had to go by the letter of the law.  

‘Look, it’s a forearm to the face,’ he said.

‘There is a duty of care … that’s what we keep hearing from the officials.

‘And there is no doubt that the forearm definitely got Toby Sexton in that throat, jaw area.

‘We did also see once we had a closer look at it that it was in fact a knee from Cobbo that looked like it might have split him.

‘Nevertheless, on a day like today, you are not getting away with that.’

 Some fans believed the referee got the decision wrong because it was the accidental knee that did the bulk of the damage.

‘Legit first contact is his hand, then his forearm but Sexton wasnt bleeding or hit hard enough from either, it was the accidental knee,’ one fan posted.

Others thought they were too lenient on the Broncos star.

‘Soft by the ref. Send off every day of the week,’ a supporter posted.
