Cardiff’s abandoned Championship clash against Rotherham will be rescheduled in FULL, the EFL confirms, even though the Bluebirds were leading 1-0 at half-time BEFORE the match was called off due to heavy rain

The abandoned Championship clash between Cardiff City and Rotherham at the New York Stadium will be rescheduled in full, the English Football League confirmed in an announcement on Thursday.

The Bluebirds were leading 1-0 at half-time during the match earlier this month, before an unprecedented downpour of heavy rain forced officials to call off the game, as the pitch was deemed unplayable.

Even though Cardiff were winning against Rotherham before the fixture’s postponement, the EFL have decided to reschedule the full 90-minute clash, rather than play out the remaining minutes of the contest.

‘Following the abandonment of the Sky Bet Championship fixture between Rotherham United and Cardiff City on Saturday 18 March due to a waterlogged pitch, it has been determined that the fixture will now be re-scheduled in full,’ the governing body announced in a statement on Thursday.

‘In respect of this particular fixture, the matter was referred to the EFL Board under EFL Regulations at the request of the Clubs involved.

‘The EFL Board reviewed submissions from both Clubs giving consideration to factors including the time of the abandonment (48th minute) and the subsequent time remaining in the contest, alongside the differing circumstances at play had the fixture been re-started from that point on a re-arranged date.

‘In considering matters such as these, the League seeks to adopt consistency with previous occurrences where fixtures have been abandoned for weather-related reasons and could not be re-started.

‘A new date for the game will be announced by the Clubs in due course.’

Disappointed by the way in which Rotherham handled the incident, Cardiff reportedly compiled a dossier of evidence to send to the EFL chiefs.

The league’s bosses, who are understood to have received the documents, handed Rotherham equal opportunity to have their say on the postponement.
