Corden again denies screaming at Balthazar waiter, says owner ‘wasn’t even there’ during incident

James Corden said he felt disbelief in response to the drama with restaurant owner Keith McNally, adding that McNally ‘wasn’t even there’ when Corden was reportedly rude to staff.

The Late Late Show comic previously conceded that he had been ‘ungracious’ to the waitstaff and added that the story offered by McNally – who suggested Corden was ‘yelling like crazy’ – was not accurate.

In a stream of text messages, Corden said the incident and its backlash has ‘been the most surreal moment,’ while adding that McNally was not present when his wife Julia was served the wrong order.

‘I mean, it’s so odd,’ he writes.

‘I never screamed at anyone, I didn’t shout, didn’t call anyone a name or swear or use derogatory language … how is it remotely a thing? And that be OK?

‘And now it’s fact, and that’s that. When the person who posted the story wasn’t even there. Just so odd.’

He added: ‘I have never talked about eggs this much.’

In addition to replying to the recent McNally-Balthazar drama, Corden added that he no longer ‘Googles’ himself.

‘I just won’t do it,’ he said. ‘I don’t Google myself, I don’t read anything about myself.’ 

Corden said he used to read stories about himself but stopped because ‘a lot of it was from broadsheet journalists … being pretty f***king cruel.’

Displaying his distaste for online reviews, Corden read a review for his performance on the show ‘The Wrong Mans,’ which he co-wrote alongside Matt Baynton.

‘There are some – me included – who think James Corden would be much improved by being crushed into a more compact, cube-shaped version of James Corden,’ Corden recalled, insinuating that the review was ‘cruel.’

‘I know the things I’ve done that aren’t good – but that was good,’ he said. ‘And I remember thinking, how is nobody saying, ‘This is really quite awful to describe the wanton death of someone?”

‘And this was in The Guardian. The f***king Guardian!’

In response to his reported Balthazar outburst, Corden said there were cars outside his home at 5.47am to take photos of him.

‘People keep telling me, ‘This is the world we live in,’ and I don’t know if that’s right,’ he said.

‘I think it’s a world we’re actively creating, engaging in and encouraging. It’s scary. Really scary.’

Retelling his version of the events that happened at the restaurant, Corden said he and his wife sent their order back because ‘Jules is allergic to egg white.’

‘That’s why we’d ordered an egg-yolk omelet,’ he said. ‘Her actual words were, ‘But don’t worry if you can’t manage it.’ 

There are only two omelets on the menu at the famous New York City eatery; the $25 Omelet with Herbs, and the $27, Egg-White Omelet. Both come with a side of home fries or salad.

Servers explained to DailyMail.com that Corden was asking for something that is not offered and was angry when it wasn’t up to his standards.

‘He wanted an omelet that had only egg yolks. Not the egg-white omelet, just egg yolks.

‘Why then would you even bother ordering an omelet if you’re allergic to eggs?’ he asked.

There are plenty of egg-free options on the Balthazar Sunday brunch menu.

The staff at Balthazar suggested that the egg allergy was not the real reason for Corden’s outburst, and that he had been rude to them in the past.

‘We deal with that kind of behavior from people all the time.

‘But he … he was very, very rude,’ George, one of the barmen, said.

In an interview with The New York Times the day after McNally posted his accusations against Corden to Instagram, he said the subject was ‘beneath’ discussion.

‘I just think it’s beneath all of us. It’s beneath you. It’s certainly beneath your publication,’ he told the reporter.

Last night, he apologized on his show for being ‘snide’.

‘Because I didn’t shout or scream, I didn’t get up out of my seat, I didn’t call anyone names or use derogatory language, I have been walking around thinking that I’ve not done anything wrong.

‘But I have. I made a rude comment,’ he said, adding that he ‘values and respects’ anyone and everyone in the service industry.

Corden’s current contract with Viacom CBS for his Late Late Show expires next year.

He and his wife are selling their $9.7million home in Brentwood and are planning to return to the UK next year.
