A teenage girl has been burned to death by a man she refused to marry.

The victim, named only as Seema, was doused in kerosene and set alight on Saturday night in the Indian village of Rajasthan, in the west of the country.

Local media report that her suitor, named as Ravi, 23, as well as his father, Sandu, beat the girl, poured fuel over her, set her on fire and then fled.

Seema was rushed to hospital with 75 per cent burns but died of her injuries late last night.

Kuber Yadav, the father of the girl, said: ‘Ravi had been harassing my daughter for [the] last seven months. He wanted to marry her but we had fixed her marriage with someone else and were planning for her wedding in November.

‘But Ravi was angry and would stalk her. We had even filed a complaint against him with police but they did not take any action.

‘I had not ever imagined my daughter would die painfully. She was a bright student and despite protests from relatives I had sent her to school.
