A daredevil grandfather swam in crocodile-infested waters in a bid to impress his grandchildren.

The man, who is in his 70s, asked his wife to snap a picture as he entered the water near a baited crocodile trap in the Northern Territory to send to his 14 grandkids.

However, the grandfather – who didn’t want to be named – told the NT News that his stunt was not as well-received as he’d hoped.

‘The idea was to send it back to the grandkids so they could think, “wow, look at Grandpa.”

‘I think they thought, “how silly is old Grandpa, he’s lost it”.’

And while he concedes it was reckless and he battled some nerves before doing it, he didn’t think he was in real danger.

He said others had been swimming in the water and he had a good look for the creatures before jumping in the water.

‘I said to my wife, “would you hurry up and press the so-and-so button” because she was taking her time.’

Interfering with a crocodile trap can lead to a $70,000 fine and six months in jail, according to the NT News.

Almost 250 saltwater crocodiles have been captured in the state this year.
