Daredevil seems to hang off Brazil cliff by fiance’s hand

  • Luiz Fernando Candeia helps Marcelle Rangel da Cunha dangle over edge of rock
  • Student, 21, appears to risk her life for photo at Brazil’s Pedra del Telegrafo
  • Tourists flock to spot to take similar pictures, where a plateau underneath the rock and clever cropping make it look more dangerous than it is

This relationship looks to be on the rocks.

More than 350 metres above the Atlantic Ocean, student Marcelle Rangel da Cunha smiles as her fiancé Luiz Fernando Candeia helps her dangle precariously over the edge of a rock.

The stunning backdrop of a blue sea and sandy beaches also looks sinister as Miss Rangel da Cunha, 21, appears to risk her life for the photo at the Pedra del Telegrafo, an hour’s drive from Rio de Janeiro on Brazil’s south east coast.

Revealed: The spot has become popular with tourists who come to take seemingly jaw-dropping pictures but it's actually just above a plateau

But all is not as it seems.

Although the stone where the student appears to be hanging from is on a cliff edge, there is actually a plateau just below where people can stand.

And thanks to clever cropping and taking the image at the right angle, people can take snaps as they appear to hang over the massive drop.

Mr Candeia, a 28-year-old ecotourism company administrator, said: ‘The Pedra del Telegrafo stands out for the incredible photos that show people on the edge of the abyss.

Mr Candeia said: 'You achieve the picture through a specific camera angle that creates an optical illusion. When you position the camera at the correct angle the rock looks like an abyss'

‘My fiancé thinks a lot like me and loves adventure and adrenaline. She really wanted to try it. I’ve done it before, but you need to practice a lot to make it work.

‘The Pedra del Telegrafo has become one of the most popular tourist spots in Rio. The number of visitors can already be compared to Christ the Redeemer, so it’s great fun to hang out and take photos there.’

Mr Candeia added: ‘You achieve the picture through a specific camera angle that creates an optical illusion. When you position the camera at the correct angle the rock looks like an abyss.’
