Race car driver Ryan Newman has been rushed to hospital following a horrifying crash that took place during the final lap of the Daytona 500 on Monday night. 

Newman, who was leading the famous race, was zooming around the speedway when his car was nudged up against a wall and flipped over. 

As the vehicle fell back onto the raceway, it was struck by another trailing driver and spectacularly flipped again as thousands of stunned spectators watched on in disbelief.   

Newman’s car eventually landed on its roof after catching on fire and rolling for several meters along the speedway.

Dozens of medics and Daytona officials ran out onto the raceway to cut Newman from the smoking wreckage before he was taken directly to a Daytona Beach-area hospital. 

The 42-year-old’s condition is not yet known. 

Driver Denny Hemlin went on to win the race for the second consecutive season, but the victory was overshadowed by the shocking smash.
