Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will miss Prince Charles’s 70th birthday to visit a homeless charity

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will miss Prince Charles’s 70th birthday to visit a homeless charity, it was reported last night.

William and Kate will visit Centrepoint, one of Princess Diana’s charities, in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, on Wednesday, said the Sun.

The duke, 36, was introduced to work with the homeless when his mother smuggled him and brother Harry into a shelter in London when they were boys.

The newspaper claimed that the decision to visit the charity was seen by William as continuing Diana’s legacy.

It is unclear if the couple will join Charles and wife Camilla for an evening celebration.

A Kensington Palace source told the Sun: ‘As a normal working day, the duke and duchess have official engagements during the daytime visiting important projects in South Yorkshire.

‘These were, of course, cleared with Clarence House to make sure they didn’t clash with any birthday celebrations.’

Meanwhile Camilla has admitted she is scratching her head when it comes to choosing a gift for Charles.

She said: ‘People keep asking me if I have bought him a present and I haven’t. He is the worst person.

‘He has a list [containing porcelain and items for the garden] and I’ve learnt through 13 years of being married that it is better to stick to the list.

‘He knows what he likes and if you give him a present, he says, “Oh that’s lovely,” when he doesn’t think it’s lovely at all.’

Earlier this week, the duchess, 71, told the Mail how she had trouble persuading workaholic Charles to slow down.

She said: ‘The older he gets, the more driven he gets.

‘Suddenly you get to 70 and a sense of mortality hits you. I just think he wants to get everything done and dusted.’
