A family has vowed to fight an electricity company over plans to demolish their beloved cubby house to make way for a three-storey office building.

The King family built the cubby house three years ago next to their home in Greenslopes, south-east Brisbane, on a patch of land at the Energex depot.

But the family-of-eight were notified of Energex’s intention to tear down the wooden structure earlier this year as part of upgrades to the site, Seven News reported.

‘We got a letter in February this year, saying that they wanted us to stop using the land. We didn’t really have much of an explanation,’ Ella King said.

Ms King said the family had been using the space for the past two decades as they believed it was spare land but now they are being ordered out.

She said no one had raised an issue with the cubby house until this year.

Energex’s executive general manager of safety and performance, Peter Price, said while he sympathised with the family, the site was the best option for the building.

‘I would expect people wouldn’t build constructions on our property,’ Mr Price said.

Plans for the office building, which will also see 20 trees chopped down, are currently on hold after concerns were raised by Brisbane City Council.

The cubby house has been used by the King family for three years, with the family saying the wooden structure had not been an issue until this year
