A family has been left devastated after their beloved pet dogs were shot by a neighbouring farmer for barking at his chickens.

The three dogs had gone on to the nearby property in Far North Queensland but were all wearing collars with name tags and contact details of the owners.

After a day long search by over 14 community members the farmer admitted to opening fire on the two labradors and one kelpie after he found them near his chickens.

One of the dogs owners, Gene Kubala, said the farmers actions were ‘extreme.’

‘A man told dad he had shot the dogs, and he pointed out where they were. He said they barked at his chickens, so he shot them. Dad was pretty upset,’ he told the Cairns Post.

One of the labradors named Django survived the shooting while the other labrador, Pisco, and the kelpie, Koda, were both killed.

‘Dad found the other two bodies in the grass. The golden lab was shot in the heart. The kelpie bled out. It was pretty distressing stuff.’

Police investigated, but said charges could not be pressed as it is within the law for a farmer to protect his livestock from other animals.

The family has, however, reported the incident to the RSPCA.

Another of the dogs owners, Robyn Kubala, posted online that the labradors were only one-year-old puppies and the kelpie was only 18 months old.

‘Can’t legally do anything! Who could shoot puppies?’ she posted.

‘Django the brown labrador is still at the vet. He is doing OK! His spirit is high but in a lot of pain as the bullet put a hole in his windpipe. Thank you for all your kind words of love for our doggies,’ she wrote.
