The Lubbe family and Juliana had been on the way home from a work function hosted by Mr Lubbe’s employer JBL Construction when the tragedy unfolded, according to Netwerk24.

Juliana had been staying with the Lubbe family for two weeks while her mother was in hospital.

Neels Lubbe, Theun’s cousin, said the father turned down the offer of a beer from his boss at the function and had left early to get the children home.

At around 11.30pm, Mr Lubbe crashed his car, causing it to turn over several times.

Elmarie died in the initial impact, News 24 reported, but Mr Lubbe managed to rescue the children from the wreck.

Officers confirmed that an investigation is ongoing and said they will be looking into the cause of both crashes, which have yet to be established

Speaking about his cousin, Neels said: ‘His children meant everything to him. I know he would have done anything to avoid this from happening. It must have happened very quickly.’
