Father dies after ‘one-punch’ attack on Central Coast NYE

A young father has died in hospital after an alleged one punch attack outside a bar on New Year’s Eve.

Haydn Butcher, 31, was with his girlfriend at The Lakes Hotel on the NSW Central Coast when a fight broke out in the early hours of Monday morning, according to The Daily Telegraph.

After the altercation, the father-of-one stepped outside and was allegedly punched once in the face by a 49-year-old man, who police say ran toward him.

Mr Butcher lost consciousness after he fell to the ground and hit his head on the ground, according to police.

The carpenter was taken to Royal North Shore Hospital where he remained in a critical condition with swelling on the brain on Monday night.

He died in hospital on Tuesday, NSW Police confirmed in a statement.  

Mr Butcher’s young daughter and girlfriend were believed to be at his bedside. 

A 49-year-old man who was arrested at a home in Bateau Bar on Monday night has now had his assault charges upgraded to assault causing death. 

He was refused bail and is set to appear at Wyong Local Court on Tuesday.
