A father has taken his own life after attacking his son with an axe during a heated early-morning argument.

The pair reportedly became engaged in a heated row at their home in Sunbury, north west of Melbourne, about 9.30am om Tuesday, before the father drew his weapon.

The son, in his 20s, suffered serious wounds to his upper body and fled the home on foot before arriving at a work site where he asked tradesmen to hide him, Nine News reported.

The tradies took the young man inside and dialed Triple Zero, and he was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

‘He was covered in blood and asking for help. We told him ‘you’re safe’, and called emergency services,’ one of the workers said. 

His father was found dead inside a parked car shortly before midday. Police said they would not be treating his death as suspicious.
