Firefighters save man who tries to jump off roof in China

This is the heart-stopping moment firefighters saved a young man on the brink of suicide after grabbing him in mid-air as he jumped off a six-storey building.

The 22-year-old is believed to have tried to take his own life in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, China, after splitting from his girlfriend of five years.

The dramatic footage, caught partly on the bodycam of a firefighter and partly from mobile phone footage from the ground, shows the man attempting to throw himself from the roof after a short conversation with firemen.

Screams and gasps can be heard as the firefighters catch the man in mid-air by grabbing hold of one of his arms and he struggles to try shake them off.

Footage from ground level shows the man dangling from the six-storey building before being yanked to safety as he squirms.

Local fire service team leader Li Zheng and his colleagues were sent to the scene.

The group was split into two, with one remaining on the ground and the other sent to the roof to speak to the young man.

‘We contacted his ex-girlfriend – it took ages to convince her to come,’ Li told local media.

Images of the tense stand-off show the man’s girlfriend on the roof with firefighters, appearing irritated by her boyfriend’s behaviour rather than sympathetic.
