Are you currently on the hunt for an exciting new job? Maybe this is your first “real” job or perhaps you’re just looking for a change in pace and career paths. Does it Offer Group Benefits?

Often the most important thing to prospective job seekers isn’t what a job is paying, it’s whether or not it offers a health benefits plan. These types of plans cover the cost of prescription drugs, dental costs at a minimum, and then can build from there offering such things as extended health coverage, out-of-country coverage, life insurance, and more. Even if you have to pay a portion of the premium yourself, these types of benefit plans end up being a huge incentive.

What’s the Company Culture Like?

A job can offer an ideal salary and a fabulous benefits package, but if the company culture doesn’t match up with what you’re looking for – it’s not going to be a good fit. The company culture can go a long way in helping you to make up your mind. You want to know that the place you accept a job offer from respects its employees, treats them fairly and that it is a team environment with collaborative efforts.

How About the Commute?

Then there is the logistics. What will the commute to and from work be like for you? Everyone would love to work close to where they live, but unfortunately, that’s not the reality for most. You need to think about such things as how long the commute will take you, how will you do that commute (car, public transit, a ride-sharing service, etc.), what the cost of that commute will be, and whether it still works out to be beneficial to you in the end.

Is There Opportunity for Advancement in the Future?

It’s also nice to know that you’re not just taking a forever job, but that you’re getting your foot in the door and that there are opportunities for advancement. A stagnant job that offers no chance of movement can be quite frustrating and even depressing.

What Are the Hours Like?

Finally, you want to give thought to the working hours. If it’s an office job then you’ll probably have standard hours, but if there is shift work and over-time expected then it’s important this is communicated from the start. These kinds of hours don’t work for everyone and can affect a person’s work-life balance.

By keeping these items in mind you’ll be able to narrow down the list of potential job opportunities and find one that truly fits with your needs and wants. What this means is that you can expect to be happy in your new position.
