Friends from Western Australia successfully sailed to Rottnest Island on floating picnic table

Mates use a PICNIC TABLE to sail almost 20kilometres from the mainland to island famous for its celebrity quokka selfies

  • Jimmy Kinsella, 33, purchased an old pontoon to create the floating vessel
  • It took six months to complete and on November 16 set sail to Rottnest Island

A group of men successfully sailed 20kilometres to Rottnest Island on a floating picnic table.

Jimmy Kinsella from Scarborough in Western Australia, purchased an old pontoon off Gumtree and had the ‘crazy’ idea to place a picnic table on it.

Mr Kinsella, 33, successfully sailed the makeshift boat from Leeuwin boat ramp in Fremantle to Rottnest Island.

The journey took the group just over two hours and only $14 worth of fuel with a 8 horsepower Mariner.

Incredible footage shows calm, glistening seas as the men drank beer and laughed as they successfully made their way to the island.

‘It was a bit of an on and off project for about six months,’ Mr Kinsella told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Kinsella, who operates a Dodgeball business with his brother, said the inspiration came to him from a ‘Floating Picnic Table Regatta’ event a couple of years ago.

He bought the pontoon which he named Impulse…on an impulse.

Before his father died in December last year, Mr Kinsella discussed and joked about design ideas with his dad and built it with him in mind.

‘I think he would have loved the end result,’ he said.

‘Dad loved a project too, I certainly got my crazy ideas from him, so it was kind of nice to finish it with him in mind.

‘He probably would have told me I was nuts sailing it to Rottnest.’

His fiancée Jennifer wasn’t happy with the old pontoon lying around for months on end when Mr Kinsella promised it would be gone within a month.

‘She wasn’t happy with it early on, but she didn’t understand my grand plan,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Kinsella decided to take the finish vessel out last month after his friend Jason declared ‘today’s the day’.

Upon arrival, the friends celebrated with a few more beers before their friends towed Impulse back using their boat.

Mr Kinsella plans on using Impulse throughout summer and said his fiancée is now happy and has been on it a few times.
