Girl dies when school bus crashes into tree in Georgia

A five-year-old girl is dead after a school bus left the road and smashed into a tree while carrying children to school in Georgia.

The Georgia State Patrol said a video shows a school bus driver struggling with the gear shift in the deadly crash Tuesday morning in Liberty County, about 50 miles southwest of Savannah.

The crash killed five-year-old Cambria Shuman. The GSP said it is too soon to know whether the 62-year-old bus driver will be charged

The bus driver and 22 children who were passengers suffered injuries. The children were taken to Liberty Regional and Winn-Army Hospitals.

Liberty County Public Safety Director Mike Hodges said the driver had the most serious injuries. He said his understanding was that the injured children had ‘bumps and scrapes and lacerations.’

The bus driver was 62-year-old Evelyn Rodriguez. Authorities say she was trapped in the crash and then later freed. She was taken to Memorial Health in Savannah.

The State Patrol said the bus driver lost control, drove into a ditch and slammed into a tree. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
