Alan Shearer may be feeling the effects of celebrating a famous European night at a raucous St James’ Park.

Playing their first Champions League at home in 20 years, the Magpies marked their occasion in style as they thrashed Paris Saint-Germain 4-1 on Wednesday night to move top of Group F with four points in two games.

Miguel Almiron became the first Newcastle player to score in the competition since Shearer scored against Inter Milan at the San Siro as he put the hosts in front with less than 20 minutes gone.

Local boys Dan Burn and Sean Longstaff scored either side of half-time to put Eddie Howe’s men three goals to the good, before Lucas Hernandez headed home a consolation goal for the Ligue 1 champions.

Fabian Schar’s wonder strike late on capped a memorable night for the Toon Army and kickstarted a party that is sure to leave some sore heads in its wake.

Shearer’s may be one of them, if his post on the social media platform previously known as Twitter was anything to go by.

‘As days and nights go that’s a f*****g Belta,’ he wrote.

‘Hangover coming!!! What a performance man.’

The Newcastle legend shared a picture of himself having a pint with former Newcastle midfielder Rob Lee ahead of the game and was then in the stands at St James’ Park.

TNT Sport cameras showed him taking in the celebrations at full-time, as the crowd erupted.

Speaking on commentary, Jermaine Jenas noted that his former Newcastle teammate looked emotional as the final whistle went.

Up until tonight, Newcastle had last tasted victory in the Champions League on 26 26 February 2003, when they beat Bayern Leverkusen 3-1 at St James’ Park with Shearer scoring a hat-trick.

Shearer may not be alone in feeling the effects of the celebrations, with Sean Longstaff admitting some of his family members were likely to be worse for wear come Thursday morning.

‘They’ll probably be a bit proud a bit drunk as well,’ he told TNT Sport after the game.

‘It’s some night I think we knew as a group that it was going to be some atmosphere.

‘But I think with me and Burn scoring on a night like tonight is pretty surreal. And we’re dreaming.

‘It’s been an unbelievable night and I’m so proud to be from Newcastle.’
