Horror crash on a major highway as NSW superstorm causes traffic chaos with dangerous three-truck pile-up and two people left dead

Two people have died in horror highway crashes on Sydney’s fringes as the city was battered by a superstorm, including one terrifying pile-up involving three trucks and several cars. 

The multi-vehicle accident occurred on the Pheasants Nest Bridge around 3pm on the Hume Motorway near Wilton, in southern Sydney, causing long delays to traffic headed in both directions. 

Fire and Rescue NSW crews worked to release several drivers trapped in their vehicles in the huge smash.

Multiple drivers were assessed by ambulance staff on the scene and one driver died at the scene from their injuries.

NSW Police confirmed ‘up to 10 vehicles’ were involved in the ‘serious collision’. 

‘At this time, one person is confirmed deceased and emergency services are assessing a number of other patients,’ NSW Police confirmed.

‘Several road closures are in place and diversions around the crash site have been established. Expect heavy delays.’

NSW Ambulance Service confirmed four people were assessed at the scene.

It confirmed two patients were taken to Campbelltown Hospital and one to Liverpool Hospital.

All northbound and southbound lanes were closed as police and emergency services tended to mounded motorists. 

Earlier another man died when his motorbike left the road and hit a tree at Creek Ridge Road, Glossodia in Sydney’s north-west.

‘Despite the efforts of emergency services, the rider – believed to be aged in his 40s – died at the scene,’ NSW Police said.

Neither fatality has been identified.
