How to Revolutionize Your Walls With DIY Projects

Ever look at glossy interior design magazines or countless Pinterest pictures of bohemian, creative decor and wish that chic designer wallpaper didn’t cost half of your salary?

You’d be surprised at how many of them are done “on the cheap”, with only a few basic tools. There’s no need for hiring a construction crew to repaint the walls or an interior architect to refresh your bedroom. Challenge yourself, engage your friends and family, and turn the renovation event into a creative adventure.

You won’t need to buy many professional renovation tools to accomplish the DIY mission. You can print most stencils and get any simple tools at a hardware store. And if you feel like you’re going to need a ladder or podium steps, just look for the nearest equipment rental companies. So enough of excuses — roll up the sleeves and go get your hands dirty!

Step By Step

Don’t rush to the store the same minute you get the idea of renewing your place. Cool down, sit comfortably and think about what you actually want to change and how you see the metamorphosis.

According To The Blueprint…

So you decided to transform the walls — brave! And let me stop you right here for a second. Before planning new shelves or heavy wooden ornaments above the sofa, make sure that the wall will get out of this alive. Bearing walls will be fine, but partition walls won’t make it. Some day you’d wake up from a nap with a nice piece of wood fell on you.

Glue It, Pin It, Fix It

Putting the architectural issues aside, it’s time to choose decoration materials and appropriate fixing methods — different types of glue, nails and screws, tapes, etc. It’s also the right moment to decide what tools to rent, buy or how you can improvise!

Safety First

Before getting to the action, make sure that you either use non-toxic substances or that you and your family are not allergic to any materials you’re going to use. Some paints and glues can release hazardous fumes while drying. The best you can do is to ask at a store for materials that will be harmless for your health.

Paint, Wood, Moss, And Other Treasures

Do you know what’s the best in DIY crafts? Absolute freedom and an endless amount of means of creative expression. You are an artist at your home, no one can limit your imagination. Everything can be your tool and decoration material. In this spirit, we prepared a couple of example projects for you. Just to wake up the artist inside of you and plant a little inspiration in your head.

Wallpaper Patchwork

Turning a small room into a colorful, psychedelic box is definitely not a good idea. But choosing one wall to become a real piece of art that will cheer you up on blue days — oh, yes!

It can also be a good opportunity to use up the remaining wallpapers you have been hoarding in your basement for years — just in case. Cut them into even wide stripes or hexagons and have fun putting them by color. You can get either a gradient effect or a background of uniform color with contrasting accents — arranged randomly.

Vertical Indoor Garden

We’re not talking about growing flowers at your windowsill. Move your house garden onto a wall! You must have seen already such green installations at stores or coffee shops. Making your own indoor wall garden requires a bit of planning, but you can easily do it yourself!

If you have light pallets or wooden floor panels, you can install them on a wall, screw in hooks and hang potted indoor plants or culinary herbs on them.

Our other idea is a hanging metal grate with pots at the bottom. This solution is perfect for growing climbing plants, such as ivy, or maranta. It’d also be a great way to grow tomatoes and avocado — their stalks often need support at the very beginning before hardening enough.

Wooden Mosaic

Small wooden panels are quite easy and inexpensive to get at many crafts or renovation stores, and they’ll make a striking and unique wall decoration! You can either paint them with stencils or take your chances on the decoupage art.

Having trouble with kids drawing on walls? Install bigger panels and paint them with chalkboard paint, so your children will have an open spot to express themselves artistically. To make this chalkboard project even more exciting, you can choose a magnetic kind of paint!

We hope that our ideas pushed you to use a little artistic magic from inside of you and change your surroundings. Are you planning to make it a whole renovation event for your loved ones? Or an independent mission just for you? Maybe you have some creative ideas to add? We can’t wait to get feedback from you. Don’t hesitate to share your before/after pictures of the wall metamorphosis adventure!
