Jeff Stelling aghast at Brendan Rodgers’ controversial post-match exchange with a female BBC reporter as the Celtic boss is labelled a ‘dinosaur’ by a women’s group for his ‘sexist’ ‘good girl’ remark

Jeff Stelling appeared shellshocked after hearing Brendan Rodgers’ controversial post-match interview with a female BBC reporter on Sunday.

Celtic boss Rodgers has been criticised by women’s groups after labelling experienced broadcaster Jane Lewis a ‘good girl’ before ending the interview.

Campaigners at the For Women Scotland organisation have accused Rodgers of ‘casual sexism’ while another group described him as a ‘dinosaur’.

Rodgers has been urged to apologise for the terse exchange, which took place on the Sportsound programme after Celtic beat Motherwell 3-1 at Fir Park.

Stelling was aghast when the interview aired during his talkSPORT breakfast show.

‘Good girl, good girl?’ he said. ‘Goodness me, Brendan. What does he mean?’

Lewis, 53, had asked Rodgers to expand on a point after she was told that ‘the story has already been written about this group’ in the context of the league’s title race.

When asked to elaborate, Rodgers, 51, appeared unhappy with the journalist’s line of questioning and said: ‘No, no. You know exactly what I mean.’

Lewis again pressed Rodgers for a follow-up, only for him to appear to end the interview. He was then heard saying: ‘Done, good girl, well done.’

A broadcaster with decades of experience, Lewis is thought to be unfazed. She has not yet commented on the matter or posted a response on her X account.

However, the Scottish Feminist Network have hit out at Rodgers.

‘Jane Lewis was just doing her job, trying to extract an explanation from Brendan Rodgers on his cryptic comment,’ the group said.

‘That the go-to attitude was condescension is quite illuminating, but really very depressing in 2024. We thought dinosaurs were extinct.’

Campaigners at For Women Scotland believe Rodgers should apologise.

A spokeswoman said: ‘It’s depressing that casual sexism is still embedded in sport. Women’s achievements are underrated and dismissed, and their professional status undermined. Rodgers owes the reporter an apology.’

Celtic chose not to comment when approached by Mail Sport on Sunday.

Lewis has previously worked for Sky News, Sky Sports, Eurosport and STV’s Scotland Today programme, and has covered a wide range of major sporting events.
