Jessica Simpson’s coming-of-age series inspired by her memoir Open Book is halted and being shelved by Amazon Freevee

The scripted pilot based on Jessica Simpson’s coming-of-age memoir Open Book has been shelved by Amazon Freevee.

The 42-year-old singer was set to be one of the executive producers on the show — written by Californication’s Tom Kapinos — that is inspired by her best-selling memoir of the same name.

According to Deadline, the concept is currently being shopped at other production companies since Amazon Freevee changed their mind after previously ordering the pilot last October.

In the pilot, Katelyn Tarver, 33, was casted to play Sadie Sparrow – an up-and-coming singer based on The Dukes of Hazzard alum herself.

Alongside Tarver, John Stamos, 59, would also play Butch Thorn – a divorced former singer/songwriter grappling with alcoholism and self-destructive proclivities.

As per the logline, Open Book follows pop star Sadie Sparrow as she rises from ingenue to musical mogul.

Over time, the show introduces viewers to ‘the family, friends, and lovers she collects along the way’ and ‘[touches] on themes of love, friendship, divorce, family, sisterhood, relationships, soul connections, Hollywood, and the music business.’

The In This Skin singer – who celebrated her youngest child Birdie’s fourth birthday earlier this week – released her memoir in February 2020.

In the first 14 weeks, Open Book sold around half a million copies in 121 countries.

At the time, her memoir became one of the highest-grossing memoirs authored by a female entertainment personality.

In Open Book, Simpson chronicled her life story — from childhood to finding fame and more.

She also delved into her first marriage with Nick Lachey and their ‘doomed’ relationship.

In 2006, the former couple divorced after four years of marriage, and Simpson later revealed the real reason for their split in her book.

The pair originally cited ‘irreconcilable differences’ in their divorce proceedings, but Simpson revealed they had started faking their marriage to appear like ‘the perfect couple’.

In her autobiography, she opened up about her romantic life, her struggle with substance abuse as well as childhood trauma she experienced in her youth.

The same year as the release of her book, Simpson had announced that she had signed a multimedia rights deal with Amazon.

The agreement had also included a series of short stories released by Amazon Original Stories.
