Former Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has described New England’s former head coach Bill Belichick as ‘socially awkward’ and told a hilarious story about their trip to New York to appear on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’.

During the latest episode of his ‘Games with Names’ podcast, Edelman opened up on a private jet ride with his legendary former coach, when the pair were both scheduled to appear on the sofa in the wake of their Super Bowl win in 2017.

New England had just pulled off their historic 34-28 comeback win in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons, and were on a media tour to celebrate.

‘He was fun,’ Edelman said. ‘I mean you know Bill, that’s the only time you can bank on that Bill is smiling and having a good time. I’m sure like five days later, he’s onto the [NFL] draft.

‘He’s a fun guy. We had some awesome conversations. We took a jet together to New York right after the Super Bowl.’

Fox Sports host Charissa Thompson was appearing as a guest on the podcast and asked Edelman if there were any ‘weird awkwardness in conversations’ during the trip.

‘Definitely, there is always awkwardness with Bill,’ Edelman said. ‘He’s socially awkward, but in a cool — like “Ahh, that’s my socially awkward friend.”‘

Edelman even mentioned that at one point during ‘The Tonight Show’ appearance Belichick had grabbed his hand after the WR made a joke about his coach being ‘a big meditator.’

‘I probably could say that now… I need to get Bill on this God dang couch [as a guest on his podcast].’

Edelman went on to say that he would be upset if Belichick appeared on Pat McAfee’s show before sitting down for an episode of his podcast.

‘I swear if he does McAfee before he does my show, that would hurt me,’ he said, before joking: ‘I didn’t take all those team-friendly deals for just nothing.’

Edelman spent all 11 seasons of his NFL career playing under Belichick in New England.

During that time, he recorded 620 receptions, 6,822 receiving yards, and 36 touchdowns.
