Letter complaining about Cobram man Darren Laffan’s car horn put in his postbox

Read the scathing letter neighbour sent to charity worker complaining about friends constantly honking their car horns on quiet residential street – but do they have a point?

  • Letter about car horn toots divides locals
  • Well known charity worker posts demand
  • It wants supporters and friends to stop tooting

An anonymous letter demanding a well-known charity worker stop his ‘friends and followers’ from tooting their car horns outside his house has divided locals.

The letter was left in Darren Laffan’s mail box in the northern border Victorian town of Cobram before he posted a photograph of it to Facebook.

Mr Laffran, who is well known for helping out local farmers, wrote despite the letter being addressed to ‘Dear Neighbours’ it appeared to be solely aimed at him.

‘While we appreciate your charity and what you do for our farmers, we don’t appreciate your friends and followers tooting their horns every time they drive past your house,’ the letter reads.

‘This has been happening day and night, every day, for almost the entire year you have lived here. Apart from being extremely annoying and waking people up, it is illegal to toot your horn except under emergency situations.’

The letter concluded by asking Mr Laffran share the message with his friends and followers to stop honking.

Mr Laffran said he would refuse to bend to the demands of the letter writer who had asked him to share the message with his friends and followers on Facebook.

‘Mine is not the only house on the street not sure how you can direct this at me,’ he wrote.

‘And no I will not be putting a post on the charities Facebook page, unless you can prove it is directed at that.’

Social media users were split on the reasonableness of the letter.

‘No need to toot the horns. Show your support in ways that don’t p*** your neighbours off.. a pretty reasonable thing to do,’ one person wrote

‘I’d find constant tooting annoying too,’ another agreed.

A comment endorsing this sentiment noted the letter had a legal point.

‘Yes and doing this is actually against the law now in Victoria It attracts a pretty hefty fine as well,’ it read.

The peace and quiet of the town of Cobram in northern Victoria is, according to one anonymous letter writer, being shattered by car horns night and day past a popular local's house

Others thought the letter was out of order, especially considering Mr Laffran’s efforts helping farmers by co-ordinating hay runs for the Need for Feed program.

He has also helped struggling dairy farmers with donations of food, machinery and vehicles, which led to him being recognised with a Cobram Rotary Citizen of Distinction award last year.

‘Thank you for your selfless service to people in need,’ one person wrote.

‘Perhaps your neighbour could assist, instead of complaining.’

‘Sounds like you have some pretty crappy neighbours. So glad they don’t rely on farmers for their food!!’ said another.

A number of people objected to the fact the letter had been dropped off anonymously.

‘They couldn’t have just knocked on your door to chat about it?’ one said.

‘Very passive aggressive. They don’t have the courage to talk directly,’ another noted.
