The video was posted online in August and complaints to both the RSPCA and Merseyside Police quickly streamed in.

Fortunately for the dog, shop owner Michael Lamb adopted him and renamed him ‘Sconehead’.

At the time Doolan was not believed to be the owner of the dog.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the Liverpool Echo: ‘We can confirm a man has been charged following reports a man kicked a Jack Russell dog on Park Road on 16 August 2017.

‘Gavin Peter Doolan, 57 years, of Waverley Road, Aigburth, has been charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal (Animal Welfare Act 2006) and using threatening/abusive words/behaviour or disorderly behaviour likely to cause harassment, alarm or distress (Section 5, Public Order Act).’

He is due to appear at Liverpool Magistrates Court on December 29, 2017.
