A 27-year-old man who says he has a phobia of colored beverages and has only ever drunk water and milk filmed the moment he tried soda for the very first time – an experience that left him coughing and gagging in horror.
Davy Jerrell, from California, took to TikTok to share a video of himself trying Gatorade, Mountain Dew, Fanta, Dr. Pepper, an ICEE and lemonade for the first time in his entire life.
Davy had never consumed anything besides water and milk, with the exception of a few sips of apple juice before he knew what it looked like, and noted that ‘anything that’s not water just seems like dirty water.’

Davy is a self proclaimed ‘chromohydrophobic,’ which is someone who has fear of colored drinks, and gave the drinks low ratings, with the highest being a five out of ten
The self proclaimed ‘chromohydrophobic,’ which is someone who has a fear of colored drinks, said when he was little he used to drink apple juice out of juice boxes and never actually ‘saw the juice.’
However, one day his fears were unlocked when his preschool teacher gave him apple juice in a clear, plastic cup. It was Davy’s first time seeing what the fruit juice looked like and he was ‘so grossed out’ that he never had any again.
When he saw the apple juice, it occurred to Davy that ‘any drink that isn’t water is just dirty water.’
Since that day, Davy has lived his life only drinking water and milk.
And after nearly 30 years of missing out on all the sugar and carbonation, he decided to give something other than water a try.
In a TikTok video which has since gone viral with over 20 million views, Davy gave some of the most popular sodas a taste, and his reaction was anything but expected.
The video began on a positive note, with Davy’s first taste test being a Blue Cool Gatorade. After he took a sip of the sports drink, he took a deep breathe and rated it a five out of ten – which is pretty good considering he has a fear of any drink that isn’t clear.
Many users thought that one of the most popular sodas, Dr. Pepper, would change his views on the carbonated drinks, but he hated it so much he didn’t even bother rating it
The ICEE was next, and while seemingly everyone loves ICEEs, Davy said the drink reminded him of ‘medicine’
Davy hated the drinks so much he had to take a minute to compose himself, chug a bottle of water and brush his teeth at the end of the video
Although the clip began on a good note, it all went down hill from there.
The second drink he tried was a Mountain Dew and his reaction was definitely theatrical to say the least.
After his first sip, Davy screamed and squirmed at the taste of the green soda and rated it a one out of ten.
Next up was the popular orange soda Fanta, this one sent Davy into a coughing frenzy and he immediately rated it a zero.
Following the orange soda, Davy tried one of the most popular sodas, Dr. Pepper.
And while many hoped Davy’s first taste of Dr. Pepper would redeem his thoughts on soda, Davy hated the drink so much he didn’t even bother rating it and quickly moved onto the next.
After the video went viral, Davy decided to put on a show for the camera once again, this time he tried a cup of vodka and immediately regretted it
Davy’s friend recorded the video and told Davy that he would have to guess the different brands of water but one of the glasses was filled with vodka, which caused him to spit
In the third and final video, after many requests from followers to try McDonald’s Sprite, Davy gave in and said the drink was ‘powerful’ but said it ‘doesn’t taste bad’
The ICEE was next, and while everyone seemingly loves ICEEs, Davy said the drink reminded him of ‘medicine’ and went onto the last drink.
His final drink in the taste test was a bottle of Grove’s lemonade, which he hated just as much as the other five drinks, and rated a zero.
At the end of the video Davy can be seen chugging a bottle of water and brushing his teeth in hopes to forget the experience ever happened.
After the video went viral, Davy decided to put on a show for the camera once again, this time he stepped it up and tried vodka for the first time ever.
In the clip, Davy can be seen sitting behind five different cups of what appear to be water, however, the 27-year-old’s friend then revealed that Davy would be trying a variety of waters and would have to guess the brand of water – except one glass was filled with vodka.
Davy picked up the third glass and was prepared to list off a popular water brand, until he took a large sip and quickly regretted his choices.
After he tasted the vodka, he began gagging and spitting until finally reaching for another glass of water.
Many TikTok users quick to make fun of how ‘dramatic’ the 27-year-old was, even though Davy told them the video was ‘100% genuine’
In the third and final video, after many requests from followers to try McDonald’s Sprite, Davy gave in.
After he took his first sip of Sprite he gasped and said it was ‘powerful’ but said it ‘doesn’t taste bad,’ however he would ‘never want it again.’
And to put any skeptic’s minds at ease Davy captioned his first viral video: ‘For those of you wandering, this is 100% genuine. I’ve had a fear of drinking anything other than water my entire life.’
However many TikTok users were still quick to make fun of how ‘dramatic’ the 27-year-old was.
‘Now I finally know how a Victorian child would act if u gave them soda thank u,’ said one user. [sic]
Another user added: ‘He is so dramatic.’
‘I feel like we should’ve maybe slowly introduced carbonation because if that’s all you focus on you can’t even taste the soda,’ commented a third user.
