A man who bought a cutlery set from Australian retailer Myer has revealed his surprise at discovering his purchase was actually a returned engagement gift.

Sam Mangan, a public relations expert from the Gold Coast, Queensland, purchased the Maxwell Williams set on the weekend for $299.

Not long after opening it, Mr Mangan claimed he discovered an unopened card which revealed the gift had been intended as an engagement present.

Since his discovery, Mr Mangan has embarked on a mission to reunite the card with its rightful owners – and is pulling out all the stops in a bid to track them down.

‘Sorry, Damo, Candice and Layla, your gift has been handed over by Jarred and Rach when they returned it and didn’t even open it to look at the card,’ he said on an Instagram story.

‘What a gift. How rude is that?’

Also posting a clip on his feed, Mr Mangan called on his followers to ‘please help me find them.

‘Tag a friend, hey tag an enemy, I don’t care or otherwise tag someone who loves to return a gift.’

As well as appealing to social media, Mr Mangan also spoke to local radio station Hot Tomato where he regaled the tale of his find and asked for listeners to help him return the card.

Mr Mangan told Daily Mail Australia he has since been contacted by one of the girls who gifted the present – and he was informed the couple are currently on their honeymoon.

He said he’s found the whole situation to be ‘a bit of a laugh’ and something many can relate to.

‘I couldn’t stop laughing [when I found the card] to be honest. It’s something so many people can relate to, but for the card to be left inside is just priceless,’ he said.

Mr Mangan said he didn’t think the card was left in the box intentionally.

He believed it was probably returned to the store following the engagement party when the couple realised they already owned cutlery sets.

Mr Mangan said he hopes to reunite the card and its owners, and put an end to the mystery – once and for all.
