A man has defended his choice to engage in a polyamorous relationship with his wife and girlfriend.

Andrew Mashiko claims the trauma of getting married young left him feeling stuck and trapped in his relationship.

He told a packed out Australian television studio filming Open Relationships for SBS he believes the dynamics of his relationships work well for his family.

‘This whole idea that love is a zero-sum game just didn’t fit for me,’ he told the crowd.

He said shortly after he got married, he engaged in a brief affair with a woman.

For the next three years, he tried to make up for his indiscretion before deciding monogamy just wasn’t for him.

‘I could love more than one person at a time and that love actually only increased and developed into something a lot more intimate when I was able to share myself openly and express myself as authentically as possible,’ he said.

Mr Mashiko has a primary partner, with whom he shares a home and spends basically all of his time with.

He said the couple share their finances, share a home together, and together embarked on a relationship with Krystal.

Krystal, a married mother herself, joined the relationship knowing and committing to being the second woman in Mr Mashiko’s life.

She lives in another city to the couple, so they ‘don’t get to share quite as much time together’ as they hoped, but Mr Mashiko said they ‘share a special bond’ with one another.
