The AFL was dealt a COVID-19 scare ahead of the St Kilda-Carlton match after a Marvel Stadium security worker tested positive to the virus amid a second spike of infections in Victoria.

The league announced they were aware of the positive infection on Thursday, just hours before the two teams were scheduled to go head-to-head.

The security contractor worked a shift patrolling the entry of the venue in Docklands, Melbourne, on Monday and did not come into contact with any sealed football-related areas.

The AFL said the clash could go ahead as Marvel Stadium is COVID-safe.

‘As per normal protocols, Marvel Stadium is COVID-safe cleaned daily and was cleaned on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights using DHHS-approved disinfecting chemicals and methods,’ a statement read.

The stadium was cleaned twice on Thursday and a total of five times since the contractor last worked.

‘Again as per the normal match-day protocols introduced by the AFL to protect players, staff and the wider community, the stadium this morning received a full intensive COVID-safe sanitisation clean ahead of tonight’s scheduled match between Carlton and St Kilda, which is in line with DHHS requirements,’ the statement continued.

‘A second intensive pre-match clean was then carried out this afternoon before the arrivals of the players and officials as a further precaution.

‘The stadium has been cleaned five times since the security contractor last worked at Marvel Stadium.’
