Megan Rapinoe reveals her DAD voted for Trump and that she argues with her parents for watching FOX

US Women’s Soccer star Megan Rapinoe, a staunch Trump critic, has revealed that her father voted the Republican in the 2016 election and both her parents ardently watch Fox News.

The team’s co-captain spoke on her recent World Cup Win and gender pay for the sport but spent a hefty chunk of her Guardian profile sharing insight into the workings of her family and her spat with the president. 

‘It’s ridiculous and absurd,’ she says of her war of words with Trump. ‘People were like: “That was so intense!” And I’m like: “Honestly, he’s a f*****g joke, so it wasn’t intense, because this is ridiculous.”‘ 

Rapinoe shared the news about her father’s Trump vote while explaining her parents politics and reaction to her coming out as a lesbian. 

She said that her parents had anxiety tied to her sexuality after she came out while studying at the University of Portland. They often struggled with both her sexuality and that of her sister Rachael – who is also an out lesbian.

Rapinoe said that her parents ‘need therapy’, saying: ‘I don’t get it. How are you simultaneously as proud as punch of me, and watching Fox News all the time, [who are doing] takedowns of your daughter?’

‘I was like: “You guys need to get on board or get out.” We had some tense times, but it came down to, “You’re either in this or not,'” Rapinoe described. 

The soccer star described her childhood home as not being political, adding that she learned of equality but lessons were often not shared in the house. 

‘Both of my parents should be really progressive – especially my mom – and I don’t get that they’re not. I’m always saying: “You guys should really be Democrats!” But they’re not, so what’s happening?’

Even though Rapinoe was critical of her father Jim’s vote for Trump, she said he is ‘the hardest working man I know’ in a post that praises him

‘I’m very similar to how they are, even though I think my dad voted for Trump,’ she added.

‘I’ll say: “I don’t get it. How are you simultaneously as proud as punch of me, and watching Fox News all the time, [who are doing] takedowns of your daughter?” That’s why I’m like: “You guys need to go to therapy.”‘

Rapinoe shared that there have been ‘major blow-ups’ between her and her family but she asserted that they were still close. 

She said: ‘It’s not like: “Ugh, I’m from a conservative town and I never talk to them any more.” I talk to my parents all the time, every day. And I feel like I have seen progress and growth. 

‘I would love it if people understood you should never say racist things and be OK with gay people, or whatever it is. But, obviously, it doesn’t happen that quickly.’ 

Rapinoe drew criticism during the World Cup when a previously-recorded interview was released in which she said she would not be going ‘to the f***ing White House’ if the team won the tournament.  

An angry President Donald Trump responded by tweeting that Rapinoe, 34, should ‘win first before she talks.’

Following her second World Cup win, Rapinoe expressed her frustration at a president who she believes is trying more and more to divide the United States. 

‘I think Trump’s message excludes people that look like me and are me, of course,’ Rapinoe told NBC’s Meet the Press.
