Workers fume after a VERY sneaky rule change left them with $85 parking fines for occupying spots they’ve used for free for years

  • Workers in Melbourne parked their cars in an unrestricted spot on Monday
  • When they returned in the afternoon a two-hour parking sign was there
  • Each worker had been fined $85 for leaving their cars there for the day
  • Bayside Council said the signs were put up on Saturday and not Monday, as said

Workers are livid after they were fined $85 for parking on a street where signs were put up after they had left their cars for the day.

Employees in Cheltenham, Melbourne, returned to their vehicles on Monday to find a new two-hour parking sign they say wasn’t there that morning.

Each of the drivers had an $85 fine attached to their vehicle.

The signs are believed to have been put up to stop President’s Cup spectators at nearby Royal Melbourne Golf Club parking on the street all day.

Hotco technical sales adviser, Greg Wilson, slammed the act as ‘reprehensible’.

‘At 8.30am there I looked up from my desk and there was a van parked on the nature strip. All of a sudden when he pulled away there was a sign there,’ he told 3AW.

He had parked in the spot on Park Road and returned to the car at 4.30pm.

‘I phoned them basically straight away after that… she said, ”oh look we’ve had a few issues with that”,’ he said.

Mr Wilson said he was asked to fill out an infringement review form to dispute the fine.

Steven White, Bayside Recreation and Infrastructure director, said the signs were put up on Saturday to manage parking for an event.

‘Parking restriction changes on Park Road, Cheltenham were installed on Saturday 7th December 2019 in preparation for the President’s Cup,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘Council has implemented a number of temporary parking restrictions to manage parking around this significant international event.

‘Council provided written notification to residents and business owners in affected areas in early November 2019, with follow up notification directly from the event organiser, PGA Tours, shortly after. The changes to parking restrictions were also shared across Council’s website, e-newsletter and social media.

‘The parking restrictions on Park Road, Cheltenham are temporary and will be removed after the completion of the event.’

Mr Wilson claimed the woman he spoke to said the signs had been put up on Saturday, but he insisted he watched council workers erect them on Monday.

He accused the council of cable tying the signs to the chain fence,  he said, according to the Herald Sun.

‘Hotco employees have been parking there for years. We would have noticed the signs in the morning if they were there …(council) must have put them up during the day,’ he told the publication.

He said no attempt was made to tell the workers what was going to happen.

Mr Wilson said he wants all workers to be given a permit.

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Bayside Council for comment.
