Like many baseball managers before him, the West Michigan Whitecaps’ Brayan Peña was ejected Friday night for screaming at the umpire.
But Peña ventured into new territory – both figuratively and literally – at LMCU Ballpark when he hopped an outfield barrier and walked up the stairs past fans.
The manager of the Detroit Tigers’ High-A affiliate was initially incensed at a questionable strike call and got in the face of the umpire, yelling at him over the perceived error.
He was eventually separated from the official by West Michigan’s bench coach, Tim Garland, but returned to home plate once more to give the umpire an earful.
From there, it was time for Peña to finally make his exit.

He even passed a food stand on his way to the exit as his team eventually lost the game
But rather than just walking down the dugout, LMCU Ballpark requires players or coaches to exit the field all the way in the corner of right field.
Peña got impatient as he approached that spot, choosing instead to take a shortcut through the crowd as he passed by stunned fans and a food stand in the concourse.
The manager of the Whitecaps’ opponent on the night, the Lake County Captains, also got ejected but Peña’s unexpected trip into the stands stole headlines from the night.
The 41-year-old enjoyed a 12-year MLB career as a catcher, and played one season for the Tigers in 2013.
Peña’s Whitecaps would ultimately lose the game 9-8 in 10 innings.
