Narcos creator developing MGM+ series about ‘fearsome Irish gangs’ of 1970s New York

The creator of Narcos is getting started on his next series, and he’s focusing on a whole new crime syndicate in a whole new city.

While appearing at Series Mania in Lille, France, Chris Brancato announced he is in early development on a series for MGM+ under the working title The Westies.

He’s currently writing the Peaky Blinders-style series about ‘fearsome Irish gangs’ of New York, beginning in the late 1970s.

As the series is still in early development, no other plot details, casting news or premiere date have been announced.

Brancato’s current MGM+ series Hotel Cocaine is currently in competition at Series Mania, where he revealed he’s also outlining a second season of that show.

In the style of Casablanca, the series follows Cuban exile Roman Compte (Danny Pino).

He serves as general manager of the Mutiny Hotel, the glamorous hub of Miami’s thriving cocaine scene of the ’70s and ’80s.

Brancato described the series as the kind of ‘muscular crime drama’ he’s become known for with modern themes, according to Deadline.

‘I look for themes such as hedonism that was part of the American and worldwide culture at that time,’ he explained. ‘Did it amount to anything?’

‘To examine this, you want to make a period piece to comment about and I think this offers commentary about today as well,’ added Brancato.

In an unexpected bit of career news, Brancato said he’s also considering a few series in the style of Beverly Hills, 90210, for which he wrote earlier in his career.
