New York stylists reveal the trendy and classic items to have in your 2023 closet

Who doesn’t love to be ahead of the trend?

While we’re only days away from saying goodbye to 2023 and thinking about whether or not we’ll partake in the ‘new year, new me’ mantra, let’s turn our heads to the less crisis-inducing commitment of our wardrobes.

With Paris Fashion Week in mind, fashion experts and forecasters are able to predict the spring-summer trends coming for 2023 from oversized to denim and metallics to fringe as we wait eagerly for the warmer months to arrive.

To break down these trends for the everyday wearer, FEMAIL has asked two New York stylists, Liz Teich and Gayle Perry, what five staples you’ll need in your wardrobe this coming year.

Get ahead of the fashion game: Stylist Liz Teich reveals the five must-have items to have in your closet for 2023

Liz Teich, who runs The New York Stylist and shares her freshest outfits to more than 100,000 Instagram followers, has been a professional commercial stylist for 15 years.

She’s dressed Tom Brady, Ashley Graham, Mike Tyson and the cast of Stranger Things.

These are her five staple items everyone will want for their wardrobe:

1. A longer skirt

It’s a far cry from Miu Miu’s ultra-mini skirt that was donned by the likes of Nicole Kidman on her stunning cover for Vanity Fair earlier this year.

But it looks like longer hemlines are back in, with Altuzarra and Givenchy sending models down the runway in all kinds of midi and maxi skirts, and in a range of textiles.

‘The midi to maxi and even pencil skirts are going to reign supreme after the mini made its comeback,’ Teich said.

‘We saw it in denim too from Nili Lotan, Tommy Hilfiger [and] Veronica Beard.’

2. Baggy jeans

The 90s continues to rear its head and it looks like baggy jeans are here to stay, for now.

Kate Moss, the iconic supermodel synonymous with the era, strut down the runway in a grunge-inspired outfit for Bottega Veneta, a tip of the hat to the looks she wore while she was the face of Calvin Klein.

In another nod to the 90s resurgence, the 48-year-old’s denim was low slung.

And Teich recommends people to follow in the supermodel’s footsteps.

‘Baggy jeans are back in a bigger way this spring (sorry to say to those who love skinny jeans), so it’s time to finally invest in a great pair, though this season there will be even more options with embellishments in any style for everyone,’ she said.

3. Classic and tailored pieces

Classic and tailored pieces were rife on the runaway at Paris Fashion Week.

The likes of Valentino and Victoria Beckham sent models onto the catwalk in sharp suits and oversized blazers.

But it wasn’t your run-of-the-mill, buttoned-up business. Chanel’s iconic bouclé jackets were given a bit of an update with some punchy pinks.

To tackle this trend, Teich recommends opting for an oversized blazer if you didn’t have one already.

4. Fringe benefits

If you want to give your outfits a bit of an extra oomph next year, consider jumping on the fringe bandwagon.

Jil Sander went big with her metallic fringe skirts sparkling on the Paris runway and Victoria Beckham added fringe to the hems of her mini dresses as well as tassels to her handbags. Versace also got in on the action.

‘If you haven’t already gotten a staple with fringe on it, now is the time,’ Teich said.

‘Whether it’s a skirt, top or jacket, it’s all about movement this season, especially for daytime.’

5. Metallic is back!

From Proenza Schouler’s gold crochet midi skirts to Theophilio’s striking reflective pants, metal is back! It also came in many forms, in sequins and holiday dressing, it is your time to shine.

But if you’re on a budget, add a touch of bling by considering an accessory, Teich suggested.

‘Metallics, especially silver, will be having a major moment, so a silver accessory like a shoe, bag or sculptural jewelry will be a great classic and more affordable way to make a statement this spring,’ she said.

Keep things classic! Stylist Gayle Perry shares her top five fashion items that NEVER go out of style

Personal and home stylist Gayle Perry says her major goal as a stylist is to ‘help women and men build smart closets and elevate their existing ones.’

She said she liked to wear and recommend pieces that were ‘classic and timeless with a bit of modern edge,’ transcending seasons and trends.

‘It’s about having less in your closet and more of the right things. Most of us don’t wear a huge portion of our closet,’ Perry told DailyMail.com.

‘Those items become noise when wondering what to wear.’

1. Well-fitting pair of jeans

Perry said a flattering pair of jeans would help ‘you look your best and feel your most confident.’

She said jeans could be a good canvas to build countless outfits on, but she urged women to seek out the right size for you.

‘I find many women aren’t wearing the most flattering jeans for their body types,’ Perry said.

2. Statement blouse

The stylist said if you want to make an impression, pick up a statement blouse that is ‘feminine and classic with edge.’

‘Paying attention to how we present ourselves to the world matters,’ she said.

‘It means we must be as thoughtful in other areas of our lives and therefore one of the most engaging people in any room.’

3. Nude pointed-toe heels

To make your legs look longer, Perry recommends a pair of pointed toe pumps in nude, which will also soften an outfit.

And their versatility is endless.

‘Nude pumps are can be worn with everything from jeans and a T-shirt to dresses,’ she said.

4. Structured blazer

This next item still plays into the 2023 trend of tailoring, but a well-fitting, structured blazer is still a classic piece to have in your wardrobe.

‘The moment you put it on your look is elevated and you feel more confident. Similar to Wonder Woman in her armor who could do anything,’ Perry said.

‘And the structure in the shoulder pads helps provide a V-shape appearance of your torso which is a very flattering look.’

Perry says she likes to pair the blazer with her other essentials: jeans and pumps, which she models below.

5. Perfect trouser pants
