A brand new multi-million dollar New York subway train has broken down on its first day on the tracks.

The R179 model from Bombardier failed a test by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) on Sunday.

The train came to an emergency stop when it ran over a blue bucket which had fallen onto the tracks from the platform of the 121st St./Jamaica Ave. station on the J line at 12.15pm.

As a result, passengers had to leave the train at the next stop, NY Daily News reported.

Later on, at 7.30pm the train had to be taken out of service.

According to the paper, a display screen showed the doors were open in one of the carriages when the train pulled into 111th St./Jamaica Ave. station and had to be pulled out of service.

Bombardier Bombardier staff have since said this message was shown in error.

MTA paid a whopping $740 million for Bombardier to build 300 cars. A batch of 70 cars were set to go into service this year on the J, Z and C lines, with another 230 set to be added in 2018.

MTA spokesman Shams Tarek told the paper: ‘The testing process involves putting cars into service and routinely reviewing their performance.

‘This testing will continue on Friday and we’re looking forward to fully deploying these trains.’
