NRL star Latrell Mitchell and boxer Tim Tsyzu keen to combine in Las Vegas for blockbuster event

Why footy superstar Latrell Mitchell and boxer Tim Tsyzu are set to team up for blockbuster event in Las Vegas: ‘It will be massive’

  • Mitchell wants to combine with Tsyzu
  • Pair could team up in US city Las Vegas
  • NRL and boxing bouts on the cards

The Australia Week extravaganza NRL supremo Peter V’landys wants to put on in Las Vegas got a huge boost with Latrell Mitchell and Tim Tszyu keen to team up.

The superstar sporting duo are set to join forces as headline acts in Vegas with Mitchell’s eagerness making a good case for his side South Sydney to be one of the four NRL clubs playing.

V’landys has been able to secure Allegiant Stadium, which will host the NFL’s showcase Super Bowl in 2024, for the two NRL games, but the Aussie teams to play there have yet to be named.

The Brisbane Broncos, Souths, Cronulla, Storm, Manly and Roosters have all expressed considerable interest in being part of this inaugural and massive cultural event featuring all things Australia.

It is part of a five-year plan for a total of 10 premiership matches in the city, featuring all 17 teams, until the end of 2028.

With nothing confirmed re which teams will play in the first year, the pulling power of Souths co-owner Russell Crowe and Manly’s biggest fan Hugh Jackman look likely to play large roles in the bids for those two sides.

As does Tszyu’s love of the Rabbitohs and his friendship with Mitchell, Souths biggest star.

Mitchell is extremely excited about playing in Vegas and is hoping Tszyu fights there that weekend also.

‘Timmy Tszyu has a huge fight today (Sunday) but he’s a different beast. I’m backing him to win,’ Mitchell, a regular at Tszyu’s fights, told News Corp.

‘After that I’m keen for a massive double-header in Vegas next year.

‘South Sydney headlining on one night and then Timmy Tszyu the next in Vegas … it would be a great event for Australian sport.’

No-one could challenge the truth in that claim.

Tszyu must beat Mexican challenger Carlos Ocampo Sunday afternoon for his part of the great Aussie invasion at Australia Week to take place.

George Rose, the former NRL toughman who is now a renowned boxing promoter running No Limit Promotions which features Tszyu’s fights, confirmed emphatically that both his fighter and Mitchell want to be part of Australia Week in Las Vegas.

‘Tim has a great relationship with Latrell and I can confirm we are looking to make it happen,’ Rose said.

‘It’s 100 per cent in the mix.

‘If the NRL is in Vegas and they are looking at doing an Australia Week, it makes sense to have the best Australian fighter in Tim Tszyu alongside the best NRL athletes like Latrell Mitchell.’

There are plans afoot to stage a UFC bout during Australia Week and  talks are ongoing with super band U2 to perform as well.

Las Vegas Tourism confirmed last week that talks about Australia Week are well progressed.

Said V’landys, ‘We’re hoping to make Australia Week in Vegas one of the biggest events of our sporting calendar.

‘If we get it going, it will be massive.’
