Panama manager Hernan Dario Gomez may be a hero to the country’s supporters, but he’s a villain in his native Colombia – for beating up his mistress in the street.

Gomez, 62, was coach of the Colombian national team when he attacked Isabel Fernanda del Rio, 38, outside a bar in Bogota in 2011, leaving her with a broken nose.

The Colombian Football Association refused to sack him, but Gomez resigned after female senators brandished red cards in Colombia’s congress in protest.

‘My behaviour that night was a total disgrace,’ he admitted. Gomez, whose nickname is El Bolilo meaning The Baton, is no stranger to violence.

In 2001, while manager of Ecuador, he was shot in the leg by a group of men demanding to know why the son of Abdala Bucaram, the former president, had been dropped from the junior squad.
