The lies parents tell! People reveal the fibs that fooled them as children – from the ice cream van only playing music when it ran out to going square-eyed from watching TV

  • This Morning started a thread on the best lies people were told by their parents
  • Amusing responses included not drinking from tap because fish will come out
  • One of the most popular fibs was that it’s illegal to turn the lights on in the car

People have been sharing the funniest fibs their parents told them in an amusing thread on Twitter.

In the original post, This Morning penned: ‘Nobody ever said that parenting is easy, but what are the best lies your parents told you?’

And it wasn’t long before the hashtag was trending as grown adults revealed some of the porkies they foolishly believed when they were younger.

‘The ice cream truck only plays the music to tell you they’ve run out of ice cream,’ wrote one, while another penned: ‘Don’t drink straight from the tap because sometimes fish come out.’

‘When I watched a black and white movie for the first time my parents told me the world was actually black and white before I was born,’ another commented.

‘They told me I brought colours to the world. Cute thing to say but s*** got me really confused until I was 12.’

Speaking of a different fib, a fourth said: ‘It’s illegal to turn your light on in the car. I was 29 before I learned this was a lie.’

Meanwhile, another revealed her mum showed her a picture of decayed teeth from an anti-tobacco ad and told her ‘that’s what happens when you don’t brush your teeth.’

Several people were told that if they stand too close to the TV they'll get square eyes and that if they swallow gum it will get stuck in their body for seven years

And it seems many individuals were fed the same pack of fibs by their parents whilst growing up.

‘If you stand too close to the TV you’ll get square eyes,’ was a popular answer, along with:

‘Don’t swallow your gum or it will be stuck in your body for seven years’ and ‘if you keep making that face it’ll get stuck like that forever.’

Meanwhile, time-keeping and honesty were also common themes throughout the Twitter responses.

‘We’ll only be at the relative house for an hour,’ wrote one, while another said of the best fib they were told: ‘If you tell me the truth I won’t get angry.’

Other funny responses included ‘if you eat watermelon seeds then a tree will grow in your stomach’ and ‘you can be anyone you want to be…..’

‘Apparently that’s identity fraud,’ the person joked.

Other amusing fibs included: 'If you tell me the truth I won't get angry' and 'on the way back we can buy it'
