PLAYER RATINGS: Owen Farrell looked off colour again but Stuart Hogg starred at Twickenham

England’s defence of their Six Nations crown got off to a shuddering start with defeat against Scotland – their first triumph on English soil in 38 years.

A first half try from Duhan Van Der Merwe proved crucial with Gregor Townsend’s team defending heroically and bettering their hosts in every aspect.

Here, Sportsmail‘s ADAM HATHAWAY and CALUM CROWE have rated the performances on show from every player at Twickenham…

Scotland impressed at Twickenham and picked up their first victory in 38 years on English soil

ENGLAND

Elliot Daly – 4

Will be beating himself up after missing Duhan van der Merwe for Scotland’s first half score and had no chance in attack.

Anthony Watson – 4

Hardly had a touch and must wonder why he bothered spending all afternoon freezing on the wing. Never had a sniff of a chance.

Henry Slade – 5

Said in the week he was hoping to get more ball but didn’t get much to work with. Spent his day more on back foot than front before being subbed.

Ollie Lawrence – 5

Didn’t get the possession his opposite number Cameron Redpath enjoyed and took until the 63rd minute to carry properly. Put tackles in though.

Jonny May – 4

One hack through looked promising before the break but, like Watson, starved of possession. Knocked on late in game and no scoring chances.

Owen Farrell (capt) – 4

Got Russell sin binned by bringing Scot’s trip to officials’ attention but off colour again after quiet autumn. Brutally overshadowed by Russell.

Ben Youngs – 5

Tidy enough but off after 55 minutes with England chasing the game and Dan Robson brought on. Eddie Jones’ go-to No.9 but for how long?

Ellis Genge – 4

Missed chance to stake his claim in absence of Mako Vunipola and Joe Marler and lucky to escape no arms tackle sanction.

Jamie George – 6

Saved a first half try by keeping Hamish Watson out on England line and energetic around pitch. Couple of line out malfunctions.

Will Stuart – 5

Helped England finally get a nudge on at scrum time in a big effort in the second half but it was a tough day at the coal face. Not the only one to suffer.

Maro Itoje – 6

Got into Ali Price’s face as he charged a couple of the scrum-half’s kicks early on and was a nuisance despite couple of line out misses and conceded penalties.

Jonny Hill – 5

Big chance with Joe Launchbury injured and tried to take Itoje’s lead in hassling Price. Did his share of donkey work and deserves another go.

Mark Wilson – 5

First start since March and put in a decent honest shift until being replaced on 54 minutes. Probably unlucky to get hooked that early.

Tom Curry – 5

One of the early penalty offenders as England got on the wrong side of ref Andrew Brace and quieter than a potential Lion should be.

Billy Vunipola – 5

Yellow-carded after 24 minutes for high tackle on Russell but ref was losing patience with England then. Still way too quiet with his carrying.

Billy Vunipola was too quiet with his carrying and yellow carded on 24 minutes for a high tackle

Replacements used: Luke Cowan-Dickie 5, Beno Obano 5, Harry Williams 4, Courtney Lawes 5, Ben Earl 5, Dan Robson 4, George Ford 5, Max Malins 4

SCOTLAND

STUART HOGG – 9

Booming kicks and some trademark, devastating runs with ball in hand. Simply magnificent from the Scotland skipper.

SEAN MAITLAND – 7

No sign of rustiness from the Saracens man. Very solid outing and fully justified his selection.

CHRIS HARRIS – 7

Continues to be Mr Reliable in the midfield for Scots. Solid in defence and never lets the side down.

CAMERON REDPATH – 8

Barely put a foot wrong on debut. Won a key turnover from Curry in second half. The first of many caps, you suspect, for the young Bath superstar.

DUHAN VAN DER MERWE – 7

Cut inside and battered through three tackles to score the game’s only try. Could yet be a late bolter for a Lions spot in the summer.

FINN RUSSELL – 7

Silly trip on Youngs led to yellow card, but was still a key influence in attack. Kicking from hand, in particular, was excellent.

ALI PRICE – 6

Rattled by Itoje in early stages and looked really nervy. But Glasgow Warriors man did well to compose himself thereafter.

RORY SUTHERLAND – 7

Continued to press his case for Lions selection with some powerful work in the scrum. Bound to have impressed Warren Gatland watching in the stands.

GEORGE TURNER – 7

Showed plenty of aggression and fed Van der Merwe for his try. Can be proud of his contribution in the absence of Fraser Brown and Stuart McInally.

ZANDER FAGERSON – 7

Showed up well and demonstrated why he’s now first-choice tighthead ahead of the more experienced WP Nel.

SCOTT CUMMINGS – 7

Looked to have formed a formidable partnership with former Glasgow team-mate Gray in the boiler room.

JONNY GRAY – 8

Brilliant in the line-out and in the loose. Won a brilliant turnover in closing stages. Outshone Itoje and Exeter team-mate Hill.

JAMIE RITCHIE – 7

Relatively quiet afternoon when set against his heroics during last year’s Six Nations and Autumn campaigns.

Jamie Ritchie (right) enjoyed a quiet afternoon compared to his heroics for Scotland last year

HAMISH WATSON – 8

Just an absolute force of nature. The most dominant and influential back-row on the pitch.

MATT FAGERSON – 7

Positive in everything that he did. Carried with real intent and purpose.

Replacements used: D Cherry (for Turner 67), O Kebble (for Sutherland 64), WP Nel (for Z Fagerson 64), R Gray (for Ritchie 66), G Graham (for M Fagerson 64), S Steele (for Price 69), H Jones (for Maitland 72)
